Personal & Family Finances
When it comes to the economy, one thing that can definitely be said is that nobody knows what will happen. Analysts might speculate, professionals might deliberate, and economists might theorize… but in the end, nobody can predict the future. And since nobody can predict the future, it is very important for everyone, especially low to middle class folks, to keep track of their personal finances.
The first step to controlling your own personal finance is to start taking personal finance budgeting seriously. Budgeting can help you a lot when things get uncertain. After all, there are some things that you just don’t need, and it is needless to spend money on those things if you don’t have to. There are a few things to remember when budgeting and working out your household finances.
First off, buy the generic brands when it comes to groceries. Generally, they taste about exactly the same. Things like sugar, flour, juice, and potatoes really don’t differ brand to brand, so you can generally save a little bit by buying store brands instead of name brands. Also, remember that there are some ways to buy gas cheaper. For example, at Wal-Mart, if you use a gift card, you get three cents off per gallon! This might not seem like very much, but why not buy it there and save the extra money? Remember that, while eating out is fun, it is not very cost effective. For you and your spouse to spend $20 eating out is a lot less cost effective than buying $20 worth of groceries that might make four meals or more. Also, remember that buying soda by the two liter is a lot more cost effective than buying it by the 20oz. Generally they cost about the same, but you get like four times as much when you buy it by the two liter!
Rather than using your cell phone all the time, and wasting minutes, try making local calls on your home phone. These are generally free, and can save your daytime minutes. But, if your cell phone has free nights and weekends, than consider waiting to make your calls until the evening when you can do it free of charge. And always make sure to keep a little money aside every month for emergencies. Having a nest egg of a couple thousand dollars can really help you out if you hit a rough spot.
The importance of personal finance is undeniable. The way you govern your expenditures will ultimately define how you live your life. Will you always run short on cash, or will you stay caught up? Will you live conservatively, and always have $20 in your pocket, or will you spend everything prematurely, and need to borrow it from a friend? The way you run your personal finances will determine how stress free you will live your life. Being short on cash is always stressful, and you can help yourself a lot by budgeting, eliminating needless spending, and using your money to get the most out of it.
